RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. We'll spend a full day eradicating invasive plants and doing trail maintenance work at the Fish and Wildlife Refuge in central Oahu. Bring gloves and small tools (loppers, handsaws, etc.) if you have them. 4 wheel drive vehicles are needed for access... the number of 4 wheel drive vehicles available will determine the number of participants for this outing.

Pu`u Wa`awa`a Service Trip (S)
We will be working on the west side of Hawai`i in a diverse dry and mesic forest. Overnight in a primitive cabin; central commissary fee. Participants must be in reasonable physical condition and willing to work. Space is limited. More information to be provided before the trip, Some 4x4 vehicles needed. 5 mi/STRENUOUS/ Valley and Ridge/Hawaii Kai
This hike is not for those who are afraid of heights. A very strenuous hike. This trail starts at the back of Hahaione Valley and ascends to the Koolau summit. The trail then follows along the crest of the Koolaus to the top of Kuliouou Ridge. We will then go down the Kuliouou Ridge trail to the picnic shelter, where we will descend off the steep side of the ridge and complete the loop to Hahaione Valley. From La Perouse Bay, hike south on the Kings Highway to Kanaio Beach - one of the most remote and beautiful areas on Maui. Visit anchialine ponds (unusual shallow ponds with tiny red shrimp) and archeological sites along the way. Bring lunch, water, hat and sunscreen. 8 mile roundtrip all day hike. This hike goes about 2 miles further south than our regular La Perouse Bay hike. Meet at Kihei Community Center (Lipoa Street & Piilani Highway) at 8:30 am to carpool. Leader: Mary Ann Ciuffini. Pali Trail Hike. Hike to the top of the Pali. Spectacular views of whales, ocean, mountains and the new Kaheawa wind farm. This is the same trail ancient Hawaiians walked to get from Lahaina to Wailuku. It rises from sea level to 1,500 feet and is 6 miles round trip. Bring lunch, water, sunscreen and camera. Meet 8:30 am at Pali trailhead (Lahaina side of tunnel just as the highway comes down to sea level – approx. mile marker 10.8) Limit 18. Hike leader: Bob Babson.

Haleakala National Park crater hike. Hike in Sliding Sands trail (10,000') and hike out Halemau'u Trail (8,000'). Explore the crater and enjoy the absolutely breathtaking scenery. Strenuous, high elevation 11 mile all day hike. Must be in good condition. Dress warm, rain gear, hiking boots, bring lunch & water (2 liters per person - there is no water in the crater). Meet 7:30 am Bank of Hawaii, Pukalani Terrace Shopping Center to carpool to the top where the hike begins. Leaders: Ann Fielding and Bob Babson. Limit 12.

Hike south from La Perouse Bay to light beacon. Beautiful ocean and mountain views. Be prepared to get wet while scrambling over rough lava to pools carved in the lava. Bring lunch, sun tan lotion, bathing suits and water. Approximately a 3 mile hike. Meet at 9 am at the Kihei Community Center on Lipoa Street to carpool to La Perouse Bay. Keauhou Overlook (E)(C)(F) D = 5 miles, E = 2700’ +/- 500’
Enjoy a 5-mile hike in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park that begins on Chain of Craters Road and passes the Ainahou Ranch House. We will have a lunch snack along the way, while enjoying panoramic views of the coastline. Prepare for walking on a wide variety of terrain – from raw lava to backcountry roads. Weather conditions may vary dramatically, so wear boots; and bring sunscreen, hat, water, raingear and lunch. Leader, Debbie Uchida (985-7303); Co-Leader, Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers (966-7002).

Keauhou Backpack (E)(C) D = 14 miles, E = 2700’ +/- 2700’
Spend the weekend at an isolated backcountry beach in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. We will start and end at Chain of Craters Road. The trail traverses terrain such as lava, an oldkipuka and grasslands. This area can be very hot and humid, so hikers must be able to handle these conditions. We will have an optional dayhike to Halape on the second day. Participants will need to bring the following: backpack (external or internal frame), tent, eating utensils, 3 quarts of water, flashlight, sturdy boots, rain gear, sleeping bag, hat, dark glasses, sunscreen, lunches and breakfast. Saturday, February 10 - Miloli`i to Kapu`a (F)(E)(C) D = 9 miles, E = sea level
This hike will start at the fishing village of Miloli`i in South Kona. Our goal is Kapu`a, where the largest preserved holua slide in Hawai`i is found. Along the way we will stop at the beautiful bays of Honomalino and Okoe. The trip is over ancient trail and a 4x4 drive road. Swimming will be at your own risk. No lifeguard will be provided. Hikers need to bring the following: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, lunch, 2-3 quarts of water; and wear sturdy boots or shoes (no sandals). Pu`u Huluhulu Full Moon Hike (E) D = 2 miles, E = 3,000’ +/- 150’
One of the most rewarding panoramas on Kilauea Volcano is seen from the top of Pu`u Huluhulu, a 500-year old cone in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. We hike out before dusk to explore an ancient spatter rampart, a forest of lava trees and tree molds. The short climb up Pu`u Huluhulu gives us the chance to enjoy the rising full moon and possible glows from the active vent of Pu`u O`o. We return in the dark, so bring reliable flashlights, along with a picnic dinner, water and raingear. Leader, Debbi Uchida (985-7303); Co-Leader, Roberta Brashear-Kaulfers (966-7002).

Maui's Whale Day Celebration.
Free, all-day family celebration of Maui's humpback whales, from 10 am to 5 pm at Kalama Park (by the big whale statue) on South Kihei Road, Kihei. Features live entertainment all day, including hula and performances by some of Hawaii's most popular musicians. A Hawaiian craft fair will feature the work of local crafters. Enjoy a children's carnival, great food by Maui restaurants at the many food booths and pick up some excellent bargains on golf packages, accommodations, restaurant meals and art at the Silent Auction. This is not a Sierra Club activity.

Tour concludes with short hike from Pu'u Ola'i to Keawala'i Church (approx 1 mile.) Bring lunch for picnic and optional swim at Maluaka Beach. Maui Recycling Group (a 501c3 organization) Compu-Swap at the War Memorial Stadium parking lot on Kanaloa Avenue, Kahului.
Friday is for commercial donors only (large drop offs) from 10 am to 2 pm, and Saturday is for the general public to donate from 9 am to 1 pm. Compu-Swap will take your old computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, cell phones, connecting cables, etc., you no longer want. Please delete personal information off your hard drives if you can before donating, but if you can't or don't know how, they will remove the hard drive and hand it back to you if you wish. Suggested/optional donation of $10/system is requested from donors to help with administrative costs of recycling but is not mandatory. Compu-Swap personnel will identify newer computers in good condition to be given away for free as follows: (1) General public giveaway on Saturday: Arrive at 9 am and take a number and comeback at noon (12pm) to pickup your free computer. (2) 501c3 giveaway: If you are a 501c3 organization, call Ron Riccio and describe the computer system you need. Compu-Swap will then attempt to set aside such a computer system and refurbish it for you and call you when it is available for pick up. Please don't put computers in the land fill. They have hazardous waste in them. Compu-Swap ships all computers they can't use here on Maui to the mainland to be recycled properly. For more information, please call Ron Riccio at 879-9390. Kealakekua “Lands of Keopuka” (E)(C)
This is the site of an environmental victory where the “Keep Kealakekua Wild” group and “Protect Keopuka Ohana” won a court victory when a proposal was made to develop the land near and below Kawa`aloa, also known as the Captain Cook Monument area. This area is rich in history, archaeological sites and native plants, as well as having pristine coastal waters. Some of the best snorkeling in Hawai`i is found here. There will be options for short hikes in the monument area or long hikes for the experienced coastal hiker along the coastline and on to the “End of the World” at Keauhou. Reservations required, and donation of $20.00. Additionally, we will need people with 4x4 vehicles who are willing to pick up weary hikers.
